“THROUGH
QUALITY EDUCATION, OUR STUDENTS WILL ACHIEVE PERSONAL SUCCESS.”
SCHOOL and COMMUNITY
Telluride High School is a public, four-year secondary school with an enrollment of 160 students in grades 9-12. Our Middle School is in the same building, enrolling 128 students in grades 6-8. Due to our open enrollment policy, 10% of our student population is from surrounding areas. These students chose TM / HS for its programs and academic excellence.
The present school was opened in November 1995; the campus sits on 10.8 acres. We are located in the town of Telluride, which is situated in a remote glacial valley in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. The school has a strong academic focus balanced with hands-on experiential education that reflects the interests and involvement of Telluride’s community.
SCHOOL FACTS
The school day consists of six-period, modified block schedule - averaging 57 minutes per period. On the two lab-block days we also have a 30-minute "Tutorial" for students to make up work and to hold meetings.
The graduating class of 2002 totaled 39 students. 75% percent of our High School students plan to enroll in a four-year college; 15% plan to go to a community college or trade school; 2% to the military; and 13% are planning to travel for a year. Of those students who will be attended college in the fall, 50% will attend college out-of-state and 50% will attend college in-state.
AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS
In 2002, Telluride Middle / High School received the John Irwin School of Excellence Award. This award is based, in part, on student’s CSAP scores and is given to only the top 2% of schools in CO. Also in 2001, Telluride High School was honored as a National Service Learning Leader School for outstanding achievement in improving education and strengthening communities through service-learning projects.

Educational
opportunities are expanded for students through the Mentorship Program. We have a unique partnership between the
community and the school to provide “real life” classes supervised by a
business owner and the school Mentorship Coordinator. Students may complete internship opportunities in career areas
such as architecture, medicine, photography, auto mechanics, journalism,
banking, interior design, video, tourism, music, etc. In 2001-02, 36 students were enrolled in 13 different mentor
programs.
