Elementary School Profile
Telluride Elementary School develops the unique potential of the whole child through challenging
experiences that build self-esteem and skills for lifelong learning.
Telluride Elementary was built in 1895 to serve the growing population of Telluride.
In May 1895, the present school site was purchased for $3,200 by the Board of Education.
Construction of an eight room building began, utilizing bricks made at a local brickyard.
Shortly before the opening of school the building collapsed!
Within a year, the Fall of 1896, the school was ready for occupancy, rebuilt at the cost
of $24,000 using imported bricks. During the first school year, the School District employed
six teachers at a salary of $80 per month each, and the principal, James McComb, was paid $125 a
month.
Six years later, in 1902, the belfry and bell were added, along with a four room addition at the
cost of $17,000. The school continued to serve the Telluride Community until its condemnation and
sale in 1967. In 1984, the School District re-acquired the property for use as a Kindergarten through fifth grade facility.
In 1987, a $2.6 million renovation was completed. Every effort was made to preserve the historic
integrity of the building. Original materials were used to enhance the school's Victorian flavor.
It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In the fall of 1998, voters passed a bond election to build a two story addition with a gym,
stage, and three classrooms. Completion was in the fall of 2000.
Current enrollment at the Telluride Elementary is 284 students.
Telluride High School Profile
Telluride High School is a public, four-year secondary school with an enrollment of 160 students
in grades 9-12. Located in the same building, Telluride Middle School has an enrollment of 128
students in grades 6-8. Due to our open enrollment policy, 10% of our student population is from
surrounding areas choosing Telluride M/HS for its programs and academic excellence.
The Telluride Middle School/High School was opened in November, 1995, and the campus sits on 10.8 acres.
TMSHS is located at the entrance to the town of Telluride which is situated in a remote glacial valley in
the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. The school has a strong academic focus balanced with
hands-on experiential education that reflects the interests, involvement, and profile of Telluride's
community.
The teaching faculty has 23.5 full and part-time High School teachers and 16.5 full and part-time
Middle School teachers. Of the 33 total staff members, 43% hold a Master's degree. The 2001-2002
student/faculty ratio in Telluride High School was approximately 13 to 1 and 16 to 1 in the Telluride
Middle School.
The school day consists of a six-period, modified block schedule averaging 57 minutes per period.
On the two lab/block days a 30 minute "Tutorial" is scheduled for students to make up work and to hold
meetings. "Zero" and "seventh" periods are available for students to take classes otherwise unavailable
during a regular school day.
Telluride offers seven Advanced Placement courses: AP Calculus, AP American Government, AP English
Composition, AP English Literature, AP Studio Art, AP Physics, and AP Statistics. In 2001-2002,
thirty-nine students took 70 exams with an overall passing rate of 83%. Telluride High School's AP
open enrollment program has no preselection criteria.
Educational opportunities are expanded for students through the THS Mentorship Program. This program
is a unique partnership between community and school providing "real life" classes supervised by a
business person and the school mentorship coordinator. Students have internship opportunities in career
areas such as architecture, medicine, photography, auto mechanics, journalism, banking, interior design,
video and/or audio, tourism, technology and music.
TMSHS offers a variety of athletic opportunities such as interscholastic (CHSAA) sports (volleyball,
soccer, basketball, and track) and club sports (alpine and freestyle skiing, snowboarding, and hockey).
Students interested in the arts have numerous opportunities to participate in our music and drama
programs as well as a variety of community arts activities. TMSHS also has active and honored Knowledge
Bowl teams. More...
